American Dairy Science Association conference

P2g

Dairy UP work was recently showcased at the conference of the prestigious American Dairy Society Association.

PhD student Md Rezaul Rakib presented early findings from P9b: Milk as an Indicator of Heat Load and Adj Prof. Ian Lean presented findings from David Sheedy’s PhD studies which are part of P2a Cattle Longevity.  Rezaul received support from the USyd’s Postgraduate  Research Support Scheme.

Rezaul is working to optimise the management and storage of milk samples to improve the detection of a specific protein (HSP70) which can be used as an indicator of heat stress (and possibly other causes of tissue stress!) in dairy cattle.

To our knowledge, this is the first study to confirm the presence of HSP70 in cow’s milk and demonstrate the influences of management and storage on the detection of HSP70 protein in raw milk, which paves the way for practical guidelines for farmers in preserving sample integrity, if this method proved to be useful as indicator of heat stress or other conditions in their cattle.
