Metabolic Investigations into Dairy Cow Longevity, by Dr David Sheedy, explores the biological and metabolic factors that influence how long dairy cows remain healthy and productive. Drawing on data from more than 1,500 cows across Australian pasture-based and confinement farming systems, the research combined advanced lipidomics, blood metabolite analysis, and herd health records to better understand the ageing process in dairy cattle.

Dr Sheedy’s research found that older cows have lower levels of beneficial omega-3 related lipids in their blood, with these changes associated with reduced survival and a higher risk of culling. Cows managed in pasture-based systems generally displayed more favourable omega-3 lipid profiles than those in confinement systems. The findings highlight the potential for targeted nutritional strategies, particularly those involving omega-3 fatty acids, to improve cow health, welfare, productivity and longevity, while supporting the long-term sustainability of the dairy industry.
