Resilient cattle
Dairy UP’s P6a Project is exploring the diversity in dairy cattle responses to heat events with the view to providing data to refine the model used to calculate DataGene’s Heat Tolerance Australian Breeding Value (ABV).
Under the supervision of Dr Anna Chlingaryan, PhD student, Alice Shirley is using rumen sensors to monitor drinking events and core body temperature to identify measures (phenotypes) of the effect of heat on core temperature in pasture-based cattle. They are working collaborating with DairyBio PhD student Laura Jensen who will is looking at the genotypes and data from sensor technologies to identify gene markers for heat tolerance.
About Dairy UP
Dairy UP is a collaborative research, development and extension program for the NSW dairy industry. It aims to unlock the potential of pastures, cows, water and milk to increase productivity and profitability, and de-risk the industry and develop new markets.
