Markers for cow longevity

P2g
Results from Dairy UP PhD student, David Sheedy’s, work have been published in the Journal of Dairy Science. He is investigating biomarkers associated with increased aging and number of calvings (parity).

This project involved collecting blood samples from 30 dairy farms (15 pasture-based and 15 TMR farms) including dry cows and cows in a range of stages of lactation.  Results indicate that reduced levels of the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in older cows, might be a significant factor in increasing susceptibility to adverse health events, reduced reproductive performance, and herd removal. Further research is needed to determine if feeding diets rich in DHA could increase longevity of dairy cows.
