Prof Trethowan receives Farrer medal
Professor Trethowan received the 2023 Farrer Memorial Medal at an event hosted by The University of Sydney on Thursday 16 November, where he also delivered the traditional winner’s oration.
Symposium highlights
Dairy UP research featured strongly at this year’s Dairy Research Foundation Symposium which was held at the University of Sydney’s Camden campus and Corstorphine Farm on November 7-8.
Seeking DNA donations
As part of the Dairy UP subprogram P1c, we are conducting a DNA survey of kikuyu pastures across southeastern Australia. The purpose of the study is to the evaluate kikuyu varietal diversity across the landscape.
Dairy UP abroad
The Dairy UP message has spread far and wide, with Dr John Penry and PhD student David Sheedy attending the recent ADFA Discovery Conference on Dairy Cattle Lifespan at Itasca, Illinois.
DATA is king!
Dairy UP’s P6 project, led by A/Prof Cameron Clark from Sydney University (pictured), is exploring ways to use existing farm, climate and industry data to develop ways to monitor cows and systems to help farmers make better decisions, for example about heat management, health and feeding.

Bulk tank milk and herd test samples could soon provide a greater and cost-effective insight into dairy herd health.
Welcome Madison
Dairy UP recently welcomed Madison Luke to the team. She is the new research officer for our “Sustainable Partnership” project with NSW EPA.
Economics of intensification
Project P3 – Intensification of diary systems is now complete. The project aimed to provide information to help farmers to decide if transitioning to an intensive production/feeding system is a suitable investment for their circumstances.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Md Rafiq Islam to the Dairy UP team as Research Fellow, working directly on Dairy UP’s Project P4 – feedbase for intensive dairy systems.
Economics and risks of beef on dairy
Dan Armstrong has recently completed an analysis of the economics and risks for raising non-replacement calves in a dairy business.

New Kikuyu varieties identified
Three new Kikuyu lines have been identified by Project P1c for further screening. This will involve larger plot trials at more locations in 2024.
